The MPC-165 system consists of the MPC-100 controller and the MP-865 narrow-format micromanipulator.
Our new MP-865 "Narrow" arm is designed for patch slice operations requiring multiple pipettes and other space-constrained applications. The MP-865 is engineered to minimize width, allowing as many arms as possible to be used in combination. Since the radially guided arm does not require long travel on the transverse axis, the Y-axis travel is reduced to 12.5 mm. The X-axis travel is increased to 50 mm for quick and easy pipette exchange. It uses the same precision cross roller bearings and lead screws as the MP-845.
Optional narrow towers (with linear slides or rotational bases) are available for mounting the MP-865 arms. With a 150 mm travel linear slide, the arm can be quickly and smoothly retracted to a convenient position for pipette exchange. The rotational base can be used for mounting to large platforms such as the Sutter MT 78 or smaller Sutter MD series platforms.
The TRIO MPC-100 integrated Rotary Optical Encoder (ROE) controller is compact with a minimal footprint; operates quietly without a fan; and is easy to use. No rack-mount controller is required. Position coordinates (relative or absolute) are displayed directly on the ROE. TRIO manipulators use a logarithmic acceleration algorithm, eliminating the need to select speeds. As the ROE knob is turned faster, acceleration increases. This allows for smoother and more intuitive control of electrode positioning without stopping to change speeds or taking your hand off the knob. Additionally, a Y-axis lock feature (accessible via DIP switch) allows only X/Z axis movement during HOME and WORK repositioning. Each MPC-100 can control up to two MP-865 manipulators.
Five conveniently located buttons control all the functions you need during normal operation. Hold the [WORK] button to quickly store a work position; pressing the [WORK] button later returns the arm to that position. The [HOME] button moves the arm to a second position, typically set to the point farthest from the microscope for quick pipette exchange. Press the [SPEED] button to select from 4 speed ranges. With practice, you may not need to change speeds, but we provide three low-speed ranges for users requiring very high magnification operation. Hold the [SPEED] button for three seconds to lock the knob to prevent accidental movement. Press the [RELATIVE] button to toggle between relative and absolute coordinates; hold the button to zero the relative coordinates. Finally, the [PULSE] button activates pulse motion mode, producing small, rapid bursts of movement that are advantageous for cell penetration with sharp electrodes. Hold [PULSE] for three seconds to set or modify the fourth axis angle between 0 and 90 degrees.
Designed with flexibility in mind, DIP switches on the controller allow the movement direction of the ROE knob to be changed according to user preference. TRIO comes standard with a universal mounting system for the most commonly used probe or pipette holders.
